Eyebrow Implants
Are Eyebrow Implants Right For You?
Two basics regarding eyebrow implants. They can be quite expensive to have done, and when done correctly they are often well worth the cost. Although one very good reason for having eyebrow implants would be to correct damage done to eyebrows due to injury, most have them done simply in the belief they will look better. This isn't a naive belief by any means, as fuller eyebrows can better frame the face, and can go a long ways towards making someone more interesting and attractive looking.
It Started In Japan - Hair implant experiments got underway in Japan in the 1930's and really didn't spread to the west until after the end of World War II. By that time the Japanese had successfully been able to make implants, not only of hair, but using animal fur as well, including for the eyebrows. The idea never really got much beyond that, perhaps because most people couldn't quite grasp the idea of having fur eyebrows.
Eyebrow implants lagged far behind scalp implants, likely due to the fact that the latter is easier to accomplish and has always been in greater demand. Earlier scalp implants often involved implanting plugs of hair, which while often successful, just as often didn't look all that realistic.
The one thing that has made eyebrow implants a reality is micro technology, where it's now possible to implant a single follicle at a time, called a micro graft, or a half dozen or so follicles at once, in which case the process is called a mini-graft. Some doctors performing this operation choose to implant a single follicle at a time, others work with 2 or 3 follicles at a time.
Where does the soon-to-be eyebrow hair come from? The preferred donor site is the back, at least for those who have hair on their back. Many men do, most women do not. The reason is obvious in the sense that hair taken from the back will not be missed. In the somewhat likely event that there's not much on the back to harvest, donor hair is usually taken from the neck or scalp just behind the ears.
Eyebrows Can Grow Fast - Hair taken from the scalp or neck and used to fashion eyebrows has one disadvantage, although it's not considered to be a particularly serious one. Scalp hair grows quite a bit faster than eyebrow hair normally does, so given that an implant is hugely successful, the new eyebrows are going to have to be trimmed regularly to prevent them from becoming overly bushy. Bushy eyebrows look great on some people, who may have had an implant done for just that reason. There are limits however as to how long one really wants his or her eyebrows to grow. Still, it's always better to trim now and then than to have eyebrows that are simply too thin or too sparse.
It makes sense that implanting a hair or two at a time should result in eyebrows shaped according to one's wishes, and the end result will certainly look a lot more natural than either plugs or patches of animal fur. The beauty of eyebrow implants these days is that they are in fact perfectly natural once in place.
Cost Of Implants - Costs of eyebrow implants can vary depending on where you look. In addition, some costs quoted on the Internet are several years old, and may have changed. Expect to pay anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000, and some will even quote a cost as high as $10,000. The price may not seem too high for one whose image is all-important as far as career is concerned. For most of us, those we meet everyday seldom give a second thought to our eyebrows, unless they are truly attractive or unusual looking.
There does not appear to be any particular risks associated with an eyebrow implant although with any surgical procedure there is always some risk of complications or infection. Some claim eyebrow implants to be essentially permanent, while other maintain that after 10 years or so, some repair work may be in order.
